In this chapter... As the Yule Ball approaches, Ron and Harry try to find out whom Hermione is going with, with no success. Harry finally gets an answer back from Sirius, who congratulates him on his success with the dragon. On Christmas morning, Dobby gives Harry a pair of hand-knitted socks. In kind, Harry pulls out his Sneakoscope from his uncle’s ugly mustard-coloured socks and he then presents the socks to Dobby. Dobby is delighted, but he is concerned because the socks match. Ron also gives him a pair of violet-coloured socks so that he can “mix them properly”. Dobby is very impressed by Ron’s compassion towards him, especially when Ron then presents him with the sweater Ron’s mum knitted him.
On the evening of hthe Yule Ball, Ron and Harry dress. Ron is ashamed of his dress robes – they are old and ugly, and he rips them in an attempt to get all the lace off. Hermione attends the ball with Viktor Krum, to Harry and Ron’s surprise – and she looks completely different, very pretty indeed. Ron is livid that Hermione went to the ball with Krum, and he completely ignores his date, who soon ditches him for someone else. Harry and Ron go for a walk to clear their heads, outside, they see Hagrid and Madam Maxime having a personal conversation they really don’t want to listen to. They learn Hagrid’s mother was a giant. This, according to Ron, is bad. They also discover Snape and Karkaroff arguing together, in the grounds..
As the Yule Ball ends, Harry gets a tip from Cedric on the upcoming task. Cedric suggests that Harry takes a bath, with the golden egg, if he wants to find out about the egg. Harry is not sure if to believe Cedric or not. When Harry comes into the Gryffindor common room, he finds Hermione and Ron having a blazing row. Hermione points out that next time, if Ron has such a big problem over her going with someone else, he should invite her first. Ron is thunderstruck and thinks Hermione has missed the point.
Harry had made a mental note never to accept so much as a crisp from Fred and George in future. He still hadn’t forgotten Dudley and the Ton-Tongue Toffee.
What is the Dursleys' Christmas gift to Harry? A single tissue
Chapter 24: Rita Skeeter’s Scoop
In this chapter... Harry is getting nervous about the next task, now that Christmas is over. The next task is in February. Harry hasn’t took Cedric’s advice about the golden egg yet – he’s still jealous that Cedric took Cho to the ball.
When lessons resume, another scathing article from Rita in the Daily Prophet, only this time she focuses her rumor-mongering on Hagrid. She announces, in the article that Hagrid’s mother was a giantess, which makes Hagrid a half-giant. Somehowor other, Rita overheard Hagrid and Madam Maxime’s conversation in the garden on the night of the Yule Ball.
When the Trio visit Hogsmead, Ludo Bagmen offers Harry illegal help on the next task. Harry is surprised by this. Fred and George also seem eager to talk to Ludo. Ludo has also been talking to some rather bad-tempered looking goblins. Harry gets into a argrument, with Rita, in the Three Broomsticks, over her story about Hagrid.
The Trio immediately head over to Hagrid’s house, when they return to Hogwarts. Hagrid hasn’t been since the article came out. A Professor Grubbly –Plank – a woman – has been teaching Care of Magical Creatures. She seems to be much better at teaching than Harry. When the Trio pound on Hagrid’s door, they’re shocked when Professor Dumbledore opens the door. Hagrid is inside, crying. Harry, Ron, and Hermione all tell him they don’t care that he’s a half-giant. Harry reminds Hagrid that he has the Dursleys as relations. When Harry gets back to the Common Room that night, he decides to see if Cedric’s hint works at all.
“Hagrid!” Hermione shouted, pounding on his front door. “Hagrid, that’s enough! We know you’re in there! Nobody cares if your mum was a giantess, Hagrid! You can’t let that foul Skeeter woman do this to you! Hagrid, get out here, you’re just being – ”
The door opened. Hermione said, “About t –!” and then stopped, very suddenly, because she had found herself face-to-face, not with Hagrid, but with Albus Dumbledore.
What does Rita Skeeter reveal about Hagrid in her newspaper article for the “Daily Prophet”? Hagrid's mother was a giantess, and his father was a wizard
