Chapter 21: The House-Elf Liberation Front
In this chapter... The Triwizard champions are given the golden egg, which they rescued from the dragons. It is supposed to help with the second task, in February. When Harry opens it however, it omits a horrible shrieking noise. Harry is delighted that he and Ron are friends again. He sends a long letter to Sirius, all about the first task, with Pigwidgeon. Hagrid is still teaching the students about Blast Ended Skrewts. Rita Skeeter is ferreting around the grounds and ends up interviewing Hagrid. Harry is afraid that Skeeter will twist everything he says, and Hermione agrees with him.
Hermione manages to persuade the boys to come with her to the Hogwarts kitchens. Harry is amazed to find Dobby, the house-elf. Dobby has been working for Hogwarts only a week and he’s much happier now. Dobby gets paid and has days off. The other house-elves do not share Dobby’s enthusiasm. Winky is also employed at Hogwarts but she’s thoroughly depressed at her freedom. The house-elves give them tons of food to take with them. Harry plans to send some to Sirius. Hermione is very happy that Dobby has come to Hogwarts, as it may encourage the other house-elves to want freedom.

“I thought it sounded a bit like Percy singing…maybe you’ve got to attack him while he’s in the shower, Harry.”

Chapter 22: The Unexpected Task

In this chapter... It is almost the Christmas Holidays. Professor McGonagall announces that a Yule Ball will be held this year in honor of the Triwizard Tournament. The Triwizard champions are supposed to open the ball. Harry and Ron are both mortified at the thought of asking a girl to the dance. Everybody seems to be hoping to be asked to the ball by Harry. There is only one girl whom Harry wants to ask: Cho Chang. Harry is devastated when she tells him she’s already going with Cedric Diggory, when he finally asks Cho, however.
Ron makes a complete fool of himself by asking Fleur Delacour. He was completely charmed with her Veela looks. Of course Fleur said no. Both Harry and Ron are astounded when they find out even Hermione has a date. In desperation Harry secures Padma Patil to go to the Yule Ball with him. Padma’s twin sister, Parvati, who is in Ravenclaw, will go with Ron Ginny is going with Neville. Younger students aren’t allowed to attend the ball if they don’t go with older students.

“Good point,” said Fred. He turned his head and called across the common room, “Oi! Angelina!”
“What?” she called back.
“Want to come to the ball with me?”
Angelina gave Fred an appraising sort of look.
“All right, then,” she said, and she turned back to Alicia and carried on chatting with a bit of a grin on her face.
“There you go,” said Fred to Harry and Ron, “piece of cake.”
