Chapter 29: Career Advice
In this chapter... Harry doesn’t even tell Hermione and Ron about what he saw in the Pensieve. Harry realises that his father – and his friends, particularly Sirius – weren’t as wonderful as he thought. Harry longs to speak to Sirius about what he saw, but Umbridge is keeping an eye on all the fires, and reading any post delivered by owls. Fred and George say that they will arrange a diversion so Harry can use Umbridge's fire to contact Sirius.
The fifth years have career advice with Professor McGonagall, to discuss what they aim to be. Harry has a meeting with McGonagall about his career ambition to become an Auror. Umbridge oversees the meeting and states that Harry will never become a Auror, with his criminal record.
When Fred and George’s diversion goes off, Harrt heads to Professor Umbridge’s office, and uses her fire, so that his head can visit Grimmauld Place. Harry manages to see both Sirius and Lupin, and he tells them all about the memory he saw, with James and a younger Snape. Lupin and Sirius both stick up for James's behavior, saying he was young and grew out of his arrogance. Harry feels better about it but has to go when he hears somebody coming. In the Enterance Hall, Fred and George are surrounded by Umbridge and the rest of the school. She tries to apprehend them and they make a spectacular escape that Harry is sure will soon be a Howart's legend, on their broomsticks. Their joke shop – Weasleys’ Wizarding Wheezes – is all ready at 93 Diagon Alley, and they market their products, of course, to the very end .

“I would advise you to concentrate hard on bringing your Transfiguration and Potions up to scratch. I see Professor Flitwick has graded you between “Acceptable” and “Exceeds Expectations” for the last two years, so your Charm work seems satisfactory. As for Defence Against the Dark Arts, your marks have been generally high. Professor Lupin in particular thought you – are you quite sure you wouldn’t like a cough drop Dolores?”

It is the last match of the Quidditch season – Gryffindor against Ravenclaw. While Hermione and Ron watch the match, Hagrid asks them them to follow him into the forest. Hermione and Harry finally discover why Hagrid has been getting so many injuries. When he was on his secret mission, with Madame Maxime, he discovered he has a half brother – Grawp – and he brought him back with him. Grawp is a giant too – although smaller than most giants. Hagrid has been hiding Grawp in the forest, and trying to teach him English. Hagrid asks Hermione and Harry to look after Grawp if Umbridge fires him. Harrry, Hermione and Hagrid also run foul of the centaurs in the forest. They do not approve of Grawp being in the forest. When Harry and Hermione return to the school, match has finished. Ron played magnificently and they won the Quidditch Cup.

“An’ this is Hermione see? Her-“ Hagrid hesitated. Turning towards Hermione, he said, “Would yeh mind if he called yeh Hermy, Hermione? On’y it’s a difficult name fer him ter remember”
“No, not at all,” squeaked Hermione.

She knows exactly what it feels like, and Harry isn’t having blank periods of time, where he doesn’t know what he was doing.
They all go to see Mr Weasley on Christmas Day. Mr Weasley’s wounds are not healing as well as they should be. The Healers had attempted Muggle stitches, on Arthur, much to Molly’s disgust. Harry, Hermione, Ginny and Ron leave Mrs Weasley shouting at her husband, and try and find the visitor’s tearoom. When they are looking for it, they come across their ex Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher – Gilderoy Lockheart. His memory is still slightly vague, so is on a closed ward. While unwillingly visiting with Lockheart, on the ward, they also meet Neville and his Grandmother. They are visiting Neville’s parents, who were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange. Hermione Ginny and Ron are horrified to learn Neville’s secret, and feel extremely sorry for him. But, of course, Harry already knew about Neville’s parents. This, perhaps, contains one of the saddest scenes for me, when Neville’s parents are introduced.

“Well it’s nothing to be ashamed of!” said Mrs Longbottom angrily. “You should be proud, Neville, proud! They didn’t give their health and their sanity so their only son would be ashamed of them, you know!”
“I’m not ashamed,” said Neville, very faintly, still looking anywhere but at Harry and the others.

Snape repeatedly taunts Harry and forces open his mind. Harry has lots of memories – some he is unwilling to show Snape – but he finally has a break-through. Harry realizes that the corridor he's been dreaming about for so many months is in the Department of Mysteries. That night as he's getting ready for bed Harry's scar explodes with pain, and Harry knows that Voldemort is happier about something than he has been in years.

“Harry, dear,” said Mrs Weasley, poking her head into his and Ron’s bedroom, where the pair of them were playing wizard chess watched by Hermione, Ginny, and Crookshanks, “could you come down to the kitchen? Professor Snape would like a word with you.”

At the station, Hagrid is not there to greet them as usual. Instead it is Professor Grubly-Plank, who sometimes stands in for Hagrid. There are strange, skeletal horses pulling the carriages that only Harry and Luna can see.

“I’ll make Goyle do lines, it’ll kill him, he hates writing,” said Ron happily. He lowered his voice to Goyle’s low grunt and, screwing up his face in a look of pained concentration, mined writing in midair. “I…must…not…look…like…a…baboon’s…backside…”

Where does the Mimbulus Mimbletonia come from? Assyria

Chapter 7: The Ministry Of Magic
In this chapter... The next day, Harry goes to the Ministry of Magic, with Mr Weasley, for the hearing. They travel on the London Underground. After a few moments’ confusion above ground they find their way to a back street and squeeze into what appears to be a broken ’phone box – not very impressive for the Ministry of Magic, Harry thinks, but Arthur dials 62442 and a woman’s voice invites them to state their business. Arthur explains; a visitor’s badge appears in the returned coin slot for Harry and they’re off – downwards, as the ’phone box turns out to be a lift.
They emerge in the very impressive and busy underground entrance hall of the Ministry, the Atrium. They head for Arthur’s office, and in the Auror Headquarters Kingsley Shacklebolt gives Arthur a copy of The Quibbler hidden in a pile of parchments: it’s obvious that their membership of the Order is a secret, but Kingsley whispers to Harry that the magazine is for Sirius, whose ‘wanted’ posters fill the office. It is a good thing they arrive there early, as Harry’s hearing time has been changed, and also the place where the hearing will be held. They hurry to Courtroom ten. Harry has to go in the Courtroom alone – Mr Weasley waits anxiously outside.

“The poor things keep calling in those – those pumbles, I think they’re called – you know, the ones who mend pipes and things – ”
“Plumbers?”
“ – exactly, yes, but of course they’re flummoxed.”

Chapter 8: The Hearing

In this chapter... Harry walks uncertainly into the giant, ominous courtroom he saw the previous year in Professor Dumbledore's Pensieve. Harry discovers that a full Wizengamot Court is going to put him on trial. Cornelius Fudge is leading the court – Percy Weasley is there too, as Court Scribe. A serious-looking witch on one side, who turns out to be Amelia Bones, flanks Cornelius Fudge. Just as the hearing is going to begin, Professor Dumbledore shows up, to defend Harry. If he is convicted Harry will be expelled from Hogwarts.
Harry explains to the Court that he only did the Patronus Charm to send the Dementors away. The majority of the judges refuse to believe this – however, Madam Ameila Bone seems impressed that Harry could produce a fully formed Patronus at fifteen years old. Professor Dumbledore brings Arabella Figg in for Harry's defense. Mrs Figg does her best to defend Harry and tell the court about the Dementor attack. Harry also gets a glimpse of Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister, whom he loathes immediately, although he's not quite sure why.
Harry is cleared of all charges and Professor Dumbledore sweeps from the room without one look or one word to Harry.

Some looked annoyed, others slightly frightened; two elderly witches in the back row, however, raised their hands and waved in welcome.

Who says “You produced a fully-fledged Patronus?” Madam Amelia Bones

Chapter 5: The Order Of the Phoenix
In this chapter...Harry discovers that 12 Grimmauld Place belongs to the Black family. It is also Headquarters to the Order of the Phoenix. Harry asks questions about the Order, after dinner. Mrs Weasley says he is too young to learn all about the Order, but Lupin and Sirius overrule her. Harry deserves to know what is going on – Fred and George stay too, as they are of age, and Hermione and Ron stay because Harry will only tell them what has been said, later. Ginny is sent to bed. Harry learns that the Order's goals are to try to stop Voldemort from recruiting followers, especially dark creatures. Voldemort is searching for a powerful weapon.
Professor Dumbledore is in trouble with the Ministry, seeming he believes Lord Voldemort is back – he's been voted off the Chairmanship of the International Confederation of Wizards, and demoted from Chief Warlock on the Wizengamot. Cornelius Fudge is convinced that Dumbledore is going to try to take over the Ministry with a private army. Molly puts her foot down and says that they must not reveal any more, and this time, the other adults agree. Realizing defeat, Harry trudges off to bed with his friends.

“But Dumbledore says he doesn’t care what they do as long as they don’t take him off the Chocolate Frog cards,” said Bill grinning.

Chapter 6: The Noble And Most Ancient House Of Black

In this chapter... Harry and the rest of the Order are trying to keep the house clean, removing objects, which have dark spells on it, so the house can be lived in. They find a heavy locket that no-one seems able to open. Fred and George tell Harry that they haven’t had the time to buy their joke shop yet, but they have been developing Skiving Snackboxes, a range of sweets that make you ill enough to get out of class and magically better once you get out and eat the rest. Harry had given the Twins the gold he won, for winning the Triwizard Tournament.
Harry meets Kreacher, Sirius's crazy old house-elf. Kreacher is rude to everyone although Hermione tries hard to be nice to him. Kreacher does not approve of have the Order in the house, and having it full of blood-trators. Harry learns a little about Sirius’s family. Sirius and Harry look at the old Black family tapestry on the wall, and Harry is surprised to find out that Sirius is related to Tonks, but also the Malfoys, the Lestranges and the Weasley’s. Sirius also tells Harry that he left home at 16 and camped out at James's, and that he had a brother, Regulus, who joined the Death Eaters and diedSirius left home when he was old enough – he often stayed with Harry’s grandparents. Harry is full of trepidation when the night before his Disciplinary Hearing at the Ministry arrives and he finds out that Sirius is forbidden to accompany him.

“I love hearing Mum shouting at someone else,” said Fred, with a satisfied smile on his face as he opened the door an inch or so to allow Mrs Weasley’s voice to permeate the room better. “It makes such a nice change.”

Chapter 3: The Advance Guard
In this chapter... Harry is still very confused. He writes letters to Sirius, Ron and Hermione, and sends them with Hedwig, demanding answers, and telling them about the Dementor attack. Harry mopes about his bedroom. Vernon comes to Harry’s room one evening – he, Petunia and Dudley are going out – apparently they have won an award for the best-kept lawn. Suddenly, there is a noise from downstairs. Harry goes to the top of the stair to find a group of wizard and witches – including Professor Lupin and Mad Eye Moody – in the hall. One of the younger witches is a Nymphadora Tonks – she prefers to be called just Tonks – who is a Methamorphagus – she can change her appearance at will. This is the Advance Guard. They are going to take Harry to a place of safety – to the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. They are going there by broomsticks. The Guard keep circling around Harry, and he has been instructed what to do if they should all be killed. Their flight is cold but uneventful, and finally they land on a dingy square in a very fishy-looking part of London. No one is answering Harry's questions; instead a slip of parchment is thrust into his hand with the mysterious message:
The Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix may be found at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, London.

The Advance Guard
Alastor Mad-Eye Moody, Remus Lupin, Nymphora Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Elphias Dodge, Dedalus Diggle, Emmeline Vance, Sturgis Podmore, Hestia Jones

“Don’t put your wand there, boy!” roared Moody. “What if it ignited? Better wizards than you have lost buttocks, you know!”

What broom does Tonks ride? Comet Two Sixty

Chapter 4: Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place

In this chapter... A house appears before his eyes, pushing aside the Muggle houses to left and right while their inhabitants carry on as before, apparently unaware. It’s gas-lit, grubby and full of things that would look quite at home in Knockturn Alley. Molly Weasley greets Harry, in a whisper, and sends him upstairs, to see Ron and Hermione. Harry finally is able to vent his pent-up frustrations on Ron and Hermione, both of whom are staying at Headquarters. Harry learns that the Order of the Phoenix is a secret society that Professor Dumbledore formed to fight Lord Voldemort. There are lots of members – in particular, Professor Snape. Fred, George and Ginny join the Trio. Bill Weasley is also in the Order – he isn’t working in Egypt any more. Fleur Delacour is working at Gringotts. Ron and Hermione haven’t attended any of the meeting, but picked up a few little bits of information, from Fred and George’s new invention – Extendable Ears. Ron and Hermione have been helping to keep the house clean. The split between Professor Dumbledore and Cornelius Fudge’s Ministry which began at the end of the Triwizard tournament has deepened and, far from accepting Harry’s word on Voldemort’s return, the Ministry is using the Daily Prophet to discredit Harry personally by making him a standing joke in the wizarding community. Percy has turned his back on his family in favour of a better job at the Ministry. Molly returns to say that the meeting is over it is time to eat. She reminds the children not to make a noise in the hall. Tonks trips over an umbrella stand. This wakes the portrait of a ghastly old woman who begins to scream obscenities and insults at them, waking the other portraits which all join in. The noise brings a man hurrying from the kitchen – it’s Sirius, and as he silences the racket he greets Harry and tells him that the ghastly old woman is his own mother.

“Hello, Harry,” said George, beaming at him. “We thought we heard your dulcet tones.”
“You don’t want to bottle up your anger like that, Harry, let it all out,” said Fred, also beaming. “There might be a couple of people fifty miles away who didn’t hear you.”

Who first greeted Harry when he arrived at the headquarters? Mrs Weasley

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Chapter 1: Dudley Demented

In this chapter... It’s the summer holidays, and Harry is, as usual, stuck at Privet Drive. He listens to the “Muggle News” by lying in the flowerbed, listening to it through the open window. It is the hottest day of the summer. Harry is concerned that he has had no news about how Lord Voldemort’s power is growing. Hermione and Ron write to him – but they seem to be hiding something from Harry. Harry is haunted by terrible dreams – of what happened to Cedric Diggory at the Triwizard Tournament – and also dreaming about locked rooms and dark corridors. Harry slowly begins to move away from the flowerbeds – when startled by a sudden noise close by, Harry jumps up and cracks his head on the window frame. Vernon threatens Harry, and Harry storms off. He sees Dudley saying goodbye to his friends – Dudley and his gang have been bullying the younger children as usual. Harry accompanies Dudley back to Privet Drive, both tormenting each other – Dudley gets the upper hand when he says he hears Harry calling out in his sleep. All of a sudden it goes even darker than usual and to Harry’s horror, two Dementors advance towards the boys. Harry manages to produce a Patronus on his third attempt – only when he remembers Ron and Hermione – and the Dementors vanish. The summer night returns and Harry is just drawing breath and trying to rouse Dudley when Mrs Figg appears at a run. Her remarks make it clear that the eccentric old Muggle neighbour Harry has known almost all his life really belongs to the wizarding world.

“What d’you mean I’m not brave when I’m in bed?” said Harry, completely nonplussed. “What am I supposed to be frighten of, pillows of something?”
“I heard you last night,” said Dudley breathlessly. “Talking in your sleep. Moaning.”

What does Vernon Dursley believe all kids should do? Not watch the news

Chapter 2: A Peck Of Owls

In this chapter... Harry is amazed to learn Mrs Figg – who used to baby-sit him – is actually a Squib. A Squib is a witch or wizard but who cannot perform magic, just like Argus Filch, the caretaker at Hogwarts. Mrs Figg had left one of her cats on guard, watching Harry. Another guard – a Mundungus Fletcher – was supposed to be watching him but he left in order to buy stolen cauldrons. Mrs Figg is furious about Mundungus. Mundungus eventually appears, and after Mrs Figg batters him with tins of cat food, Mundungus is dispatched to tell Albus Dumbledore all what has happened.
Harry and Dudley finally get to the relative calm of 4 Privet Drive. His aunt and uncle are horrified at the state of Dudley – who is still isn shock after almost being kissed by a Dementor – and predictably blame Harry. Harry is bombarded by a succession of owls, the first from the Ministry of Magic expelling him from Hogwarts for doing Underage Magic. Then another one saying that he is not expelled, just suspened and requiring his attendance at a disciplinary hearing on August 12. He gets two more Owls – one from Arthur Weasley and one from Sirius, telling him not to leave Privet Drive under no circumstances. As he tries to explain the situation to Uncle Vernon he receives even more owls from Mr. Weasley and Sirius, both warning him to stay in the house and do no more magic.
Harry tells his aunt and uncle what had happened – about the Dementors in Little Whinging, about Lord Voldemort coming back to power – knowing that they will not believe him. Just when Harry thinks the night can hold no more drama, it's discovered that Aunt Petunia knows more about the wizarding world than she's ever let on before. She knows all about Azkaban, and Lord Voldemort too. Vernon wants Harry to leave the house instantly. However, to make Harry even more confused, his aunt Petunia recieves a Howler from someone. Harry, Vernon and Dudley hear the howler's mysterious message: "REMEMBER MY LAST, PETUNIA". Petunia, for once, overrides her husband's wishes and declares, in no uncertain terms, that Harry will stay. Harry goes to his bedroom, even more confused.

Mrs Figg raised the arm from which her string bag dangled and whacked Mundungus around the face and neck with it; judging by the clanging noise it made it was full of cat food.
“Ouch – gerroff – gerroff, you mad old bat! Someone’s gotta tell Dumbledore!”
“Yes – they – have!” yelled Mrs Figg, swinging the bag of cat food at every bit of Mundungus she could reach. “And – it – had – better – be – you – and – you – can – tell – him – why – you – weren’t – there – to – help!”

What date and at what time is Harry’s disciplinary hearing? 9 am, August 12th

Chapter 35: Veritaserum
In this chapter... Harry and Cedric’s body are whizzed back, from the graveyard, to the entrance of the maze. The first thing Harry sees is Professor Dumbledore and Cornelius Fudge. The crowd who has been watching the tournament are in shock. Harry tells him Professor Dumbledore that Lord Voldemort is back. Professor Dumbledore heads off Mr Diggory, who is heading towards Harry and Cedric.
Professor Moody helps Harry up to his office – although Professor Dumbledore told Harry to stay where he was. Moody questions Harry about what happened. Harry is amazed and confused as Mad Eye Moody tells him how he has been the traitor all along. Moody’s a Death Eater and has been plotting against Harry all year. He has been assisting Harry through all the tasks – he told Hagrid to tell Harry about the dragons. He told Cedric about the golden egg, knowing Cedric would tell Harry. Moody even gave Neville a book on magical water plants – that mentioned Gillyweed – so that Neville may have assisted Harry with the second task. Harry learns that the real Mad-Eye Moody has been locked up all year in a trunk, and the impersonator is none other that Barty Crouch’s son, whom everyone believed dead.
Just as he raises his wand to kill Harry he’s Stupefied by Dumbledore, who comes crashing into Moody’s office to rescue Harry with Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape. Professor Dumbledore gives Crouch a dose of Veritaserum, a truth-telling potion, and he tells them all how he managed to stay alive and get into Hogwarts to help the Dark Lord kidnap Harry. It began when Barty Crouch Junior was sent to Azkaban. Mrs Crouch was dying, so she somehow convinced Barty Crouch, Senior to save Junior from Azkaban by exchanging places - a plan that also involving Polyjuice Potion. Since the Dementors are blind, they did not realize the figure leaving Azkaban was Barty Junior. Barty’s mother used the Polyjuice Potion until she died so that any prisoner who saw her would think that it was still Barty Junior. Mrs Crouch was buried under Barty’s name, while Mrs Crouch’s grave – she had a private funeral – is empty. Barty Junior was placed under an Imperius Curse by his father and forced to wear an Invisibility Cloak at all times while Winky nursed him back to health. One day Bertha Jorkins stopped by the Crouch household and overheard Winky talking to Barty Junior. She heard enough to figure out what was going on. When she confronted Barty Senior, he put such a strong Memory Charm on her that it damaged her mind to be quite forgetful.
Winky talked Mr Crouch Senior into allowing his son to attend the Quidditch World Cup. Barty Crouch Junior was actually sitting in the Top Box next to Winky under the Invisibility Cloak. Barty Crouch Junior stole Harry’s wand. He became annoyed with Death Eaters that were playing games with the Muggles and tried to go after them, later. . Winky used her special powers to restrain him and drag him into the forest. But he was still able to cast the Dark Mark spell with Harry’s wand. When the Ministry wizards shot their stunning spells, both he and Winky were hit, breaking the bond between them. Crouch Senior, on seeing Winky, realized Junior must be there and went to search for him in the bushes. He came back for him when everyone else had gone. He re-placed him under the Imperius Curse and dismissed Winky for allowing Junior to get a wand and almost escape.
Shortly after, Wormtail came to the Crouch’s home with a very frail Lord Voldemort. Voldemort put Barty Senior under the Imperius Curse and released Barty Junior, whom Voldemort ‘chooses’ to carry out his plan at Hogwarts. Wormtail and Barty Junior went to Moody’s house the night before Hogwarts' first term was to start. The ‘real’ Moody put up a fight, but they were able to stun him and stuff him into Moody’s trunk before. Wormtail was to watch over Barty Senior at their house, but as Senior began to fight the Imperius Curse. Crouch Senior escaped from Wormtail and made his way towards Hogwarts to ‘tell all’ to Dumbledore. Harry, and the Marauders Map nearly ruined things – when Harry saw the name Barty Crouch in Professor Snape’s stockroom. Barty Junior killed his father. He turned his father into a bone and buried it in the patch of earth Hagrid had dug up for the Niffler lesson. Before the last Task, Barty Junior offered to take the Triwizard Cup into the Maze and in the process, turned it into a Portkey to take the first person that touched it to the graveyard where Voldemort awaited.

“I told you Harry…I told you. If there’s one thing I hate more than any other, it’s a Death Eater who walked free. They turned their backs on my master, when he needed them most. I expected him to punish them. I expected him to torture them. Tell me he hurt them Harry…” Moody’s face was suddenly lit with an insane smile.

What is in the trunk when Professor Dumbledore inserts the key into the first keyhole? Spell books

Chapter 36: The Parting Of The Ways

In this chapter... Professor Dumbledore takes Harry to his office – Sirius is waiting there. Professor Dumbledore urges Harry to tell him everything, even though Harry would rather just go to sleep. Harry finds that the pain is relieved a bit, as he tells them the story, of what exactly happened in the graveyard. . Harry finds out that his wand’s core, a phoenix feather, comes from Dumbledore’s phoenix, Fawkes. This is why Lord Voldemort’s wand and Harry’s wand refused to duel with each other. This explains why the previous spells – the people Voldemort had killed – were coming out of Voldemort’s wand.
Professor Dumbledore takes him to the hospital wing for a peaceful sleep. Cornelius Fudge’s loud voice disturbs him however. Fudge sent a Dementor to Crouch Junior, and the Dementor adminstered the Dementor’s Kiss. Dumbledore is incensed by this. Now nobody will here the full story. Fudge refuses to believe that Voldemort is back. Fudge doesn’t believe Harry either. Professor Dumbledore says that he and Fudge must go their separate ways. Professor Snape shows Fudge the Dark Mark on his arm. This proves Lord Voldemort has returned to power. Fudge gives Harry his Triwizard winnings – even though Harry doesn’t want all the gold galleons. Dumbledore immediately springs into action. Sirius reveals himself. Snape and Sirius relucantly shake hands, but it is clear they still hate each other. Dumbledore starts issuing orders, recalling members of the old Order that fought Voldmort when he was powerful before.

“The only one against whom I intend to work,” said Dumbledore, “is Lord Voldemort. If you are against him, then we remain, Cornelius, on the same side.”

Which two adults does Professor Dumbledore insist put their differences aside? Sirius Black and Professor Snape

Chapter 37: The Beginning
In this chapter... It is nearly end of the school year. Harry hardly notices them passing. The Trio learn that Hagrid and Madam Maxine are about to go on a journey for Dumbledore to help in the fight with Voldemort, but he won’t say what it is. The last feast is a sombre meal. Cedric’s memory is honored, and Professor Dumbledore tells the school that Voldemort has come back.
As they travel back to London, Hermione tells them a big secret. She discovered how Rita was getting all her information – she was transgfiguring herself into a bettle/ she was a unregistered Animagus. Hermione threatened to tell the Ministry about her illegal shape-changing unless she held off writing gossip for one full year. The Trio get into a final argument with Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle. The Trio hit them with spells – and so do the Weasley Twins.
Fred and George finally tell the Trio who they had been blackmailing. Ludo Bagman paid the Twins in Leprchaun gold, at the Quidditch World Cup. He refused to pay them in proper gold – of course the Leprchaun gold vanished after a few hours. Ludo was always trying to asist Harry with the Triwizard tasks, because he had placed a bet, with goblins, that Harry would win the Triwizard Tournament. Harry decides to give Fred and George his winnings so they can realize their dream to open a joke shop. He feels slightly better when he gets off the train and leaves with the Dursley’s.

“Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.”

Ron’s Niffler is the best searching out the gold. Hagrid informs them that the gold disappears in a few hours time so there’s no point to trying to steal them. This is the third task – to get through the maze and overcome the obstables inside it. As Harry heads back to the castle, Viktor Krum asks for a private word. He is going to tell Dumbledore his dream immediately. As he gets to the door of Dumbledore's office, Harry overhears Cornelius Fudge intimate that Madame Maxine, being a half-giant, may have been involved because the incident with Crouch occurred near the Beauxbatons carriage. Dumbledore replies that he thinks Fudge is prejudiced. Moody, also in the room with Dumbledore, warns them to cease their conversation as Harry is just outside the door.

“Well, you keep missing the cushions, don’t you!” said Hermione impatiently, rearranging the pile of cushions they had used for the Banishing Spell, which Flitwick had left in a cabinet. “Just try and fall backwards!”
“Once you’re Stunned, you can’t aim too well, Hermione!” said Ron, angrily. “Why don’t you take a turn?”

Neville sometimes visits them in the holidays, with his Gran, but his parents do not recognise their son. Harry is horrified at this knowledge, and promises to tell no one about Neville’s parents.

“Come to watch Harry in the last task!” said Mrs Weasley brightly. “I must say, it makes a lovely change, not having to cook. How was your exam?”
“Oh…okay,” said Ron. “Couldn’t remember all the goblin rebels’ names, so I invented a few. It’s all right,” he said, helping himself to a Cornish pasty, while Mrs Weasley looked stern, “they’re all called stuff like Badrod the Bearded and Urg the Unclean; it wasn’t hard.”

Chapter 23: The Yule Ball
In this chapter... As the Yule Ball approaches, Ron and Harry try to find out whom Hermione is going with, with no success. Harry finally gets an answer back from Sirius, who congratulates him on his success with the dragon. On Christmas morning, Dobby gives Harry a pair of hand-knitted socks. In kind, Harry pulls out his Sneakoscope from his uncle’s ugly mustard-coloured socks and he then presents the socks to Dobby. Dobby is delighted, but he is concerned because the socks match. Ron also gives him a pair of violet-coloured socks so that he can “mix them properly”. Dobby is very impressed by Ron’s compassion towards him, especially when Ron then presents him with the sweater Ron’s mum knitted him.
On the evening of hthe Yule Ball, Ron and Harry dress. Ron is ashamed of his dress robes – they are old and ugly, and he rips them in an attempt to get all the lace off. Hermione attends the ball with Viktor Krum, to Harry and Ron’s surprise – and she looks completely different, very pretty indeed. Ron is livid that Hermione went to the ball with Krum, and he completely ignores his date, who soon ditches him for someone else. Harry and Ron go for a walk to clear their heads, outside, they see Hagrid and Madam Maxime having a personal conversation they really don’t want to listen to. They learn Hagrid’s mother was a giant. This, according to Ron, is bad. They also discover Snape and Karkaroff arguing together, in the grounds..
As the Yule Ball ends, Harry gets a tip from Cedric on the upcoming task. Cedric suggests that Harry takes a bath, with the golden egg, if he wants to find out about the egg. Harry is not sure if to believe Cedric or not. When Harry comes into the Gryffindor common room, he finds Hermione and Ron having a blazing row. Hermione points out that next time, if Ron has such a big problem over her going with someone else, he should invite her first. Ron is thunderstruck and thinks Hermione has missed the point.

Ludo has also been talking to some rather bad-tempered looking goblins. Harry gets into a argrument, with Rita, in the Three Broomsticks, over her story about Hagrid.
The Trio immediately head over to Hagrid’s house, when they return to Hogwarts. Hagrid hasn’t been since the article came out. A Professor Grubbly –Plank – a woman – has been teaching Care of Magical Creatures. She seems to be much better at teaching than Harry. When the Trio pound on Hagrid’s door, they’re shocked when Professor Dumbledore opens the door. Hagrid is inside, crying. Harry, Ron, and Hermione all tell him they don’t care that he’s a half-giant. Harry reminds Hagrid that he has the Dursleys as relations. When Harry gets back to the Common Room that night, he decides to see if Cedric’s hint works at all.

“Hagrid!” Hermione shouted, pounding on his front door. “Hagrid, that’s enough! We know you’re in there! Nobody cares if your mum was a giantess, Hagrid! You can’t let that foul Skeeter woman do this to you! Hagrid, get out here, you’re just being – ”
The door opened. Hermione said, “About t –!” and then stopped, very suddenly, because she had found herself face-to-face, not with Hagrid, but with Albus Dumbledore.

Dobby has been working for Hogwarts only a week and he’s much happier now. Dobby gets paid and has days off. The other house-elves do not share Dobby’s enthusiasm. Winky is also employed at Hogwarts but she’s thoroughly depressed at her freedom. The house-elves give them tons of food to take with them. Harry plans to send some to Sirius. There is only one girl whom Harry wants to ask: Cho Chang. Harry is devastated when she tells him she’s already going with Cedric Diggory, when he finally asks Cho, however.
Ron makes a complete fool of himself by asking Fleur Delacour. He was completely charmed with her Veela looks. Of course Fleur said no. Both Harry and Ron are astounded when they find out even Hermione has a date. In desperation Harry secures Padma Patil to go to the Yule Ball with him. Padma’s twin sister, Parvati, who is in Ravenclaw, will go with Ron Ginny is going with Neville. Younger students aren’t allowed to attend the ball if they don’t go with older students.

“Want to come to the ball with me?”
Angelina gave Fred an appraising sort of look.
“All right, then,” she said, and she turned back to Alicia and carried on chatting with a bit of a grin on her face.

Harry cuts his meeting with Sirius short when Ron walks into the Common Room. Harry is furious with him still, and they get into another row.

Chapter 17: The Four Champions
In this chapter... Harry is totally stunned. He knows he never put his name in the Goblet…although he may have daydreamed of doing so. He finally goes into the back room, where the other Triwizard competitors are waiting.
Fleur, Viktor and Cedric are very confused how Harry’s name got choosen too – there should be only one competitor per school. Ludo Bagman seems to be the only person, who seems to be pleased that Harry’s name was drawn.. Madame Maxime and Professor Karkaoff seem to believe that Professor Dumbledore is trying to cheat a win with two champions. Harry is not allowed to duck out now, when a name is drawn, the competitor have to take part. Professor Snape seems very sceptical, while Professor Dumbledore seems just puzzled. Professor Moody believes someone put Harry’s name in the goblet as a cleverly disguised assassination attempt. Harry is extremely confused, and is glad to get back to the Gryffindor Common Room. All the Gryffindors are delighted that Harry is one of the champions, and really want to know how Harry managed to get his name in the Goblet. When he gets upstairs Harry is shocked to discover Ron doesn’t believe that he didn’t put his name in. They get into a heated argument, and both go to bed fuming.

“Harry, Cedric, I suggest you go up to bed,” said Dumbledore, smiling at both of them. “I am sure Gryffindor and Hufflepuff are waiting to celebrate with you, and it would be a shame to deprive them of this excellent excuse to make a great deal of mess and noise.”

They consider Cedric should have been the only Triwizard Chamption. The Slytherins – particually Draco, Crabbe and Goyle – enjoy tormenting Harry (and Ron and Hermione) by making badges that flash POTTER STINKS.
During Potions class Harry is summoned upstairs for a photo shoot with the rest of the champions. Rita Skeeter, the snooping journalist from the Daily Prophet, corners him for an interview. Rita uses a quill that is magical – the H notes she is taking don’t tell the truth about him or what he’s saying. Harry is rescued by Professor Dumbledore, who summons him forward to have his wand weighed and inspected. The wand weigher is Mr Ollivander, who Harry brought his wand from, three years ago. One by one, Mr. Ollivander checks the wands, pronouncing them all fit to compete. He reaches Harry’s wand last, and Harry holds his breath, hoping that Mr. Ollivander isn’t about to announce to the whole room that his wand is related to Voldemort’s. Mr. Ollivander does say he remembers Harry’s wand, but says nothing else about it and, after examining it for a much longer time than any of the others, states that it, too, is in perfect condition. Later, in the Gryffindor dormitory, Harry finds a letter from Sirius, who tells him to meet him at the Gryffindor fire in a few weeks.

He doesn’t want Sirius to put himself in danger for his sake. Harry sends Hedwig off with the letter. In the DADA class, Professor Moody does the Imperius Curse on all of them so the students can practice throwing it off. Only Harry is able to resist the curse, and Moody is mightily impressed.
The students from Beaubaxtons and Durmstrang arrive the day before Hallowe’en. The castle is given a thorough scrubbing and when the day finally arrives all the students go out to the grounds to greet the arriving schools. The Beaubaxtons arrive first, in a gigantic horse-drawn carraige. The Head Mistress is Madame Maxime. She is the largest woman Harry has ever seen. She is as big as Hagrid, but elegant and beautiful in spite of her size. The Durmstrang students arrive soon after in a gigantic ship that appears magically in the lake. Harry and Ron are astounded that Viktor Krum, the famous Quidditch player, is a student there and intends to become his school champion.

“Excuse me, I don’t like people just because they’re handsome!” said Hermione indignantly. Ron gave a loud false cough, which sounded oddly like “Lockhart!”

Mr Crouch and Ludo Bagman are also at the feast – they are also going to be judges at the Tournament, together with the Head teachers of the schools. Professor Dumbledore explains the rules of the Triwizard Tournament. He unveils a goblet spewing forth blue flames. This goblet that it the "impartial judge" that will be deciding who the school champion is. Each school iwill be allowed one person to take part in the Triwizard Tournament. The next day, Fred and George attempt to put their names in the goblet, after taking the Aging Potion, and try and get past the Age Line. They’re instantly thrown back against the wall and sprout magnificent white beards that amuse everyone. Angelina Johnson, a Chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team has managed to put her name in the goblet, together with Cedric Diggory. Viktor Krum has too, and also the girl, who asked Ron for the Bouillabaisse.
That evening, the students eagerly wait to see who will be chosen as each school champion. That night after yet another feast the whole school eagerly awaits the choosing of the school champion. Viktor Krum gets selected for Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour, the veela, from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts. The champions file out to a back room, and everyone thinks the event is over until the goblet spews forth one more name: Harry Potter.

“Done it,” Fred said in a triumphant whisper to Harry, Ron and Hermione. “Just taken it.”
“What?” said Ron.
“The Aging Potion, dungbrains,” said Fred.
