Chapter 16: Professor Trelawney’s Prediction
In this chapter... It is exam time. Harry, Ron and Hermione are rather distracted, as Harry the execution of Buckbeak, the Hippogriff is scheduled for the end of the week, and Hagrid is very depressed and preoccupied.
During his Transfiguration exam, Professor Trelawney surprises Harry with a real prediction. She slips into a trance and announces that the Dark Lord’s servant will escape tonight and rejoin his master. This person will assit the Dark Lord will help him rise again. When she comes to she remembers nothing.
Hagrid sends the Trio a note, telling them that Buckbeak lost his appeal and that he’ll be executed at sunset. The Trio don’t want Hagrid to go through this alone, so slip down to his hut, under the Invisability Cloak. Hermione is shocked and amazed to find Scabbers hiding in Hagrid’s hut.. Professor Dumbledore, the Minister of Magic, another man and a exuctuioner is heading towards Hagrid’s hut. Hagrid send the Trio away. They sneak off back towards the castle. Scabbers is wriggling frantically in Ron’s pocket. The Trio hear the dull thud of the ax and Hagrid’s cries.

“Hermione!” said Lupin, startled. “What’s the matter?”
“P-P-Professor McGonagall!” Hermione gasped, pointing into the trunk. “Sh-she said I’d failed everything!”

Chapter 17: Cat, Rat, and Dog

In this chapter... The Trio can’t believe that the executioner really killed Buckbeak. Suddenly Scabbers starts going crazy. He bites Ron and then takes off through the grass, followed closely by Crookshanks.Ron runs after him and rescues him, replacing the rat in his pocket. Suddenly, the giantic black dog – the one Harry jas been seeing all year – appears. It attacks Ron and drags him out of sight, into the Whomping Willow.
Hermione and Ron are panic stricken – they can’t figure out how to get the Whomping Willow. Crookshanks shows them the way. There is a tunnel that leads to the Shrieking Shack. They find Ron upstairs Ron tries to tell his friends that Sirius Black is the great black dog, - he is a Animagus, he can change into a animal at will. However, before he can do so, Sirius Black disarms them all.
Harry rages at Sirius, telling him that he betrayed his parents. Harry gets has his wand back and Black is cornered, Black tries to explain that there’s more to the story but Harry doesn’t want to listen. The Trio and Sirius are interupted by Professor Lupin, who disarms Harry and helps Sirius to his feet. Lupin seems pleased ro see Sirius. Hermione tells them all that Lupin is a werewolf. Lupin says that the Trio need to hear the full story, and starts explaining. He tells them that the story starts with Ron’s rat, Scabbers. He says that Scabbers is really a wizard by the name of Peter Pettigrew, who is supposed to be dead. Peter was supposed to be killed by Sirius.

“Oh, help, help,” Hermione whispered frantically, dancing uncertainly on the spot, “please…”
Crookshanks darted forward. He slithered between the battering branches like a snake and placed his front paws upon a knot on the trunk.

Chapter 18: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, And Prongs

In this chapter... Professor Lupin starts the story. He was bitten by a werewolf when he was a child – every full moon, he turns into a werewolf. This is why his Boggart is a full moon. All the teachers at Hogwarts know that he is one. Lupin tells the Trio about when he was at school. He had three best friends – Sirius, James (Harry’s father) and Peter Pettigrew. His three friends became unregistered Animagi to help him during his transformations. There is a reason why Professor Snape is not fond of Lupin, and why he hated Harry’s father. Snape was at school with Lupin and the others. Snape was almost killed one night when Sirius put him in harm’s way during one of Lupin’s transformations, and it was James that pulled him back and saved his life. Just as Lupin as finishing this tale, Professor Snape appears in the dootway and disarms them all.

Then Ron voiced what Harry was thinking. “You’re both mental.”

Were Sirius Black and James Potter in their first, third, fifth or sixth years when they managed to turn into animals? Fifth year

Chapter 19: The Servant Of Lord Voldemort

In this chapter... Professor Snape seems deranged with anger. He plans to take both Professor Lupin and Sirius Black to the castle, with the Trio – of course the Trio will be expel;ed. Snape wants the dementors kill Black by their fatal kiss. And Lupin won’t have a job much longer when everybody learns he is a werewolf. Hermione pleads with Snape to let Lupin finish the story, which might prove Sirius’s innocence. Snape refuses. Professor Snape is knocked out by the force of the three spells.
Lupin finishes his story, telling them that it was Pettigrew that had betrayed Harry’s parent’s, not Sirius. Sirius and Peter swapped roles – Peter was the Potter’s Secret Keeper. Sirius never told Lupin that they swapped roles, as he was afraid that Lupin betrayed the Potters. The Trio finally believe this long and complicated story. Lupin forces Scabbers reveal himself to his true form. The Trio are all amazed when the rat turns into the short, balding Peter Pettigrew. Peter finally admits to selling James and Lily Potter out to Voldemort. Peter seems terrified – especailly of Sirius. Harry believes Sirius. He begs Sirius and Lupin not to kill Pettigrew. They will take him to the castle, and let the dementors deal with them. They tie him up, and they head back up to the castle. Professor Snape is still out cold.

“Then you should have died!” roared Black. “Died rather than betray your friends as we would have done for you!”
