Chapter 13: Mad-Eye Moody
In this chapter... The Trio start lessons again. In Herbology – which they do with the Hufflepuffs – the have to deal with Bubotuber plants, which pus smells like petrol but is a good cure for acne. The Gryffindors still have to do Care of Magical Creatures with the Slytherins. Hagrid’s new project is Blast-Ended Skrewts, giant lobster looking creatures that smell like rotting fish, have stingers, and can burn you as well.
Later in the day, Malfoy starts taunting Ron’s family, after another article in the Daily Prophet about Mr Weasley – written by Rita Skeeter. is just about to start dueling when Malfoy suddenly turns into a ferret right in front of everyone. Mad-Eye Moody – or, to give him his official title, Professor Alastor Moody – comes stumping down the stairs. Malfoy had tried tp jinx Harry when his back is turned, so Moody tranformed Malfoy into a ferret. Only when Professor McGonagall appears on the scene does Moody turn Malfoy back into a human, after McGonagall says they never use transfiguration as punishment. Instead, Moody drags Malfoy off to Professor Snape, Head of Slytherin House. He isn’t frightened by Malfoy’s threats of what his father will do – Mr Malfoy and Snape seem to be well known to Moody.
Ron and Harry both agree that seeing Malfoy berated in front of the whole school is one of the best memories ever. Fred, George and Lee Jordan praise Moody’s lessons, apparently he really knows the Dark Arts.

“I don’t like people who attack when their opponent’s back’s are turned,” growled Moody, as the ferret bounced higher and higher, squealing in pain. “Stinking, cowardly, scummy thing to do…”
The ferret flew through the air, its legs and tail failing helplessly.
“Never – do – that – again …” said Moody, speaking each word as the ferret hit the stone floor and bounced upwards again.

Who is constantly being called or hinted at being a "troll" by Ron throughout the book? Eloise Midgen

Chapter 14: The Unforgivable Curses

In this chapter... The Trio have their first Defence Against the Dark Arts, with Moody, on Thursday. In their first class, Professor Moody tells them all about the three Unforgivable Curses – and demonstrates them too. He demonstrates them on spiders. Professor Moody’s catchphrase is CONSTANT VIGILENCE!
The three Unforgivable Curses are the Imperius curse, the Cruiciatus curse and the Avada Kedavra curse. Many witches and wizards were controlled with the Imperius curse “years ago” (i.e. during Voldemort’s reign of terror), and some claimed to be – but who was telling the truth, and who was lying? The curse can be fought, but better to avoid it altogether. When Moody does the Cruiciatus curse on the second spider, the spider curls up on itself and starts to twitch and rock back and forth, obviously in tremendous pain. The final curse - Avada Kedavra – is the Killing curse. This is the curse, which killed Harry’s parents. Moody takes the third and final spider from the jar, points his wand a final time, and casts the Killing Curse on it; a blinding green light and a rushing sound are all that accompany it, and the now-dead spider has not a mark on it. Moody tells them there is no counter curse, no way to block it, and the only person known to have survived it is sitting in front of him – Harry Potter. Harry is disturbed to see what the Avada Kedavra curse looks like, since it’s that spell that killed his parents. Neville especailly seems very distracted. He named the second curse – the Cruciartus curse. Professor Moody, late gives Neville a book on Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean.. He seems very gentle and kind to Neville. They leave with a new-found respect for Moody.
Ron and Harry have lots of homework – especailly Divination. They decide to make up predictions, as usual. Hermione finally tells Harry and Ron why she’s been spending so much time in the library. She’s started a new campaign called S.P.E.W., or, the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, and wants Harry and Ron to join. Hedwig makes an appearance on the Common Room windowsill. Harry is relieved to finally get a reply back from Sirius, who tells him that’s he’s flying north immediately to be close to Harry. Harry is very upset at this, since he does not want Sirius to be caught and sent back to Azkaban.

“Next Monday,” he said, as he scribbled, “I am likely to develop a cough, owing to the unlucky conjunction of Mars and Jupiter.” He looked up at Harry. “You know her – just put in loads of misery, she’ll lap it up.” (Ron to Harry)

What does the Imperius curse do? It controls another person completely by using the command “Imperio”. One of the three Unforgivable curses
