He tries to tell Harry to be careful, and Harry admits that he overheard the argument the night before and that he’s not that afraid. Harry tells Ron and Hermione about Black’s vendetta. There is a middle-aged man sharing their compartment – the initials on his case says Professor R. J. Lupin. Harry, Hermione and Ron guess that this is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA) teacher.
At dusk, the train stops unexpectedly. They haven’t reached the station yet. All the lights go out. They barely make out someone boarding the train. Then the mysterious thing opens their car door. Harry hears screaming and then collapses onto the floor. When he comes to he feels very sick and very ashamed. No one else collapsed or got so sick. Ginny and Neville have also entered the compartment. Professor Lupin tells him it was a dementor that came onto the train, and that they suck all the happiness out of people. He gives everybody in the compartment chocolate – it helps them recover from a Dementor attack.
Malfoy is positively gleeful when he hears that Harry collapsed on the train, and immediately starts imitating him. At the welcoming feast, Professor Dumbledore announces that Professor Lupin is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, and that Hagrid has been promoted to Care of Magical Creatures professor. Also, Dementors will be guarding Hogwarts, while Sirius Black is loose.

“Well, I am sorry to tell you that Professor Kettleburn, our Care of Magical Creatures teacher, retired at the end of last year in order to enjoy more time with his remaining limbs.”

The trio cheer him up by telling him it’s all Malfoy’s fault for not listening to the directions.

“You look in excellent health to me, Potter, so you will excuse me if I don’t let you off homework today. I assure you that if you die, you need not hand it in.”
