Friday 18th May – 64 days

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was published on July 8, 1999. The film of the same name was released in May and June of 2004.

Chapter 1: Owl Post

In this chapter... We begin the book on Harry’s thirteenth birthday. He is doing his summer homework in the dead of night, in his bedroom, so that he doesn’t occur the wrath of the Dursleys. He gets birthday cards and presents from Ron, Hermione and Hagrid – delivered by his own Hedwig, Errol, the Weasley owl and another owl. Hermione sends him a broomstick servicing kit. She is spending her summer in France. Hagrid sends him a rather frightening book entitled “The Monster Book of Monsters” which attacks, and Ron sends him a Sneakoscope. Apparently, when there is anybody untrustworthy around, it lights up and spins. Ron tells Harry that Percy is going to be Head Boy at Hogwarts in September. Also, the Weasley family won 700 galleons, with the Daily Prophet prize draw. They are in Egypt at the moment, visiting Ron’s older brother, Bill. Both Ron and Hermione hope to see Harry in Diagon Alley when they are shopping for their new term at Hogwarts. You are allowed to visit the village of Hogsmeade, when you are a third year, but you have to have a permission form signed.

Deciding he’d worry about the Hogsmeade form when he woke up, Harry got back into bed and reached up to cross another day on the chart he’d made for himself. Counting down the days left until his return to Hogwarts.

Chapter 2: Aunt Marge’s Big Mistake

In this chapter... There is a news report that there is a escape convict on the loose. Harry is dismayed to learn that Aunt Marge, Uncle Vernon’s sister, is coming to stay at Privet Drive. Marge has the same opinion of Harry as the other Dursleys – she openly detests Harry. . Harry makes a deal with Uncle Vernon, saying he’ll be as normal as possible while Marge is here if Uncle Vernon will sign his permission slip that will allow Harry to visit the village of Hogsmead during the weekends. Harry sends Hedwig to the Weasleys.
Marge delights in insulting Harry, and makes constant suggestions for his improvement. Her bulldog, Ripper, is almost as bad. Harry manages hold his temper until her last night there. Marge starts insulting Harry’s parents. Before he can help it, Harry swells Marge into a giant balloon and refuses to put her right again. He packs his trunk in a rage, and bolts out the door into the night.

“No, Vernon,” hiccoughed Aunt Marge, holding up a hand, her tiny bloodshot eyes fixed on Harry’s. “Go on, boy, go on. Proud of your parents are you? They go and get themselves killed in a car crash (drunk, I expect) …”
“They didn’t die in a car crash!” said Harry, who found himself on his feet

Chapter 3: The Knight Bus

In this chapter... Harry has left Privet Drive but has no idea to go next. He realizes he’s in a lot of trouble because he has just donedid illegal magic. Harry is sure he’s going to get expelled from Hogwarts. Harry feels as if he is being watched, as he stands in Magnolia Crescent. He makes out a hulking shape in an alleyway, glaring at him. Harry trips over his trunk and somehow manages to flag down the Knight Bus. The Knight Bus takes the stranded witch or wizard anywhere they want. The conductor is Stan Shunpike, and the driver is Ernie Prang. Harry calls himself Neville Longbottom – everybody knows Harry’s real name because of the Voldemort attack. Neville, of course, also attends Hogwarts, in the same year as Harry. Harry asks to go to Diagon Alley.
Harry reads in the Daily Prophet that a man, Sirius Black, has broken out of Azkaban and is very dangerous. He was a big supporter of Voldemort, and killed 13 people with one curse. He is the same person who was mentioned on the Muggle news.
When Harry finally gets to Diagon Alley he is met by the Minister of Magic himself, Cornelius Fudge. Harry was seen Fuyddge before – last year when he came to take Hagrid to Azkaban – but he was under the Invisability cloak then, with Ron. Fudge says that Aunt Marge has been restored to her correct size and her memory modified. Harry is amazed to learn that he is not going to be punished for doing magic. Harry will stay at the Leaky Cauldron Pub until he returns to Hogwarts.

“Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard. Just stick out your wand hand, step on board, and we can take you anywhere you want to go. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I will be your conductor this eve – ”
