Chapter 13: Mad-Eye Moody
In this chapter... The Trio start lessons again. In Herbology – which they do with the Hufflepuffs – the have to deal with Bubotuber plants, which pus smells like petrol but is a good cure for acne. The Gryffindors still have to do Care of Magical Creatures with the Slytherins. Hagrid’s new project is Blast-Ended Skrewts, giant lobster looking creatures that smell like rotting fish, have stingers, and can burn you as well.
Later in the day, Malfoy starts taunting Ron’s family, after another article in the Daily Prophet about Mr Weasley – written by Rita Skeeter. is just about to start dueling when Malfoy suddenly turns into a ferret right in front of everyone. Mad-Eye Moody – or, to give him his official title, Professor Alastor Moody – comes stumping down the stairs. Malfoy had tried tp jinx Harry when his back is turned, so Moody tranformed Malfoy into a ferret. Only when Professor McGonagall appears on the scene does Moody turn Malfoy back into a human, after McGonagall says they never use transfiguration as punishment. Instead, Moody drags Malfoy off to Professor Snape, Head of Slytherin House. He isn’t frightened by Malfoy’s threats of what his father will do – Mr Malfoy and Snape seem to be well known to Moody.
Ron and Harry both agree that seeing Malfoy berated in front of the whole school is one of the best memories ever. Fred, George and Lee Jordan praise Moody’s lessons, apparently he really knows the Dark Arts.

“I don’t like people who attack when their opponent’s back’s are turned,” growled Moody, as the ferret bounced higher and higher, squealing in pain. “Stinking, cowardly, scummy thing to do…”
The ferret flew through the air, its legs and tail failing helplessly.
“Never – do – that – again …” said Moody, speaking each word as the ferret hit the stone floor and bounced upwards again.

Chapter 14: The Unforgivable Curses

In this chapter... The Trio have their first Defence Against the Dark Arts, with Moody, on Thursday. In their first class, Professor Moody tells them all about the three Unforgivable Curses – and demonstrates them too. He demonstrates them on spiders. Professor Moody’s catchphrase is CONSTANT VIGILENCE!
The three Unforgivable Curses are the Imperius curse, the Cruiciatus curse and the Avada Kedavra curse. Many witches and wizards were controlled with the Imperius curse “years ago” (i.e. during Voldemort’s reign of terror), and some claimed to be – but who was telling the truth, and who was lying? The curse can be fought, but better to avoid it altogether. When Moody does the Cruiciatus curse on the second spider, the spider curls up on itself and starts to twitch and rock back and forth, obviously in tremendous pain. The final curse - Avada Kedavra – is the Killing curse. This is the curse, which killed Harry’s parents. Moody takes the third and final spider from the jar, points his wand a final time, and casts the Killing Curse on it; a blinding green light and a rushing sound are all that accompany it, and the now-dead spider has not a mark on it. Moody tells them there is no counter curse, no way to block it, and the only person known to have survived it is sitting in front of him – Harry Potter. Harry is disturbed to see what the Avada Kedavra curse looks like, since it’s that spell that killed his parents. Neville especailly seems very distracted. He named the second curse – the Cruciartus curse. Professor Moody, late gives Neville a book on Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean.. He seems very gentle and kind to Neville. They leave with a new-found respect for Moody.
Ron and Harry have lots of homework – especailly Divination. They decide to make up predictions, as usual. Hermione finally tells Harry and Ron why she’s been spending so much time in the library. She’s started a new campaign called S.P.E.W., or, the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, and wants Harry and Ron to join. Hedwig makes an appearance on the Common Room windowsill. Harry is relieved to finally get a reply back from Sirius, who tells him that’s he’s flying north immediately to be close to Harry. Harry is very upset at this, since he does not want Sirius to be caught and sent back to Azkaban.

“Next Monday,” he said, as he scribbled, “I am likely to develop a cough, owing to the unlucky conjunction of Mars and Jupiter.” He looked up at Harry. “You know her – just put in loads of misery, she’ll lap it up.” (Ron to Harry)

What does the Imperius curse do? It controls another person completely by using the command “Imperio”. One of the three Unforgivable curses

Mr Weasley has to help out ex-Auror Mad-Eye Moody, who used magic in front of Muggles when he thought he heard an intruder. A Auror is a Dark Wizard catcher – Moody had put lot of Dark Wizards in Azkaban. Moody seems much more wary of people lately. Mrs Weasley, Bill and Charlie take everybody to King’s Cross Station. In the start of term speech, Professor Dumbledore tells the students that the Quidditch Cup will not be held this year . He is interupted by somebody entering the Great Hall. . A wizened, peg-legged man stumps to the table and, to the amazement of everyone, Dumbledore announces that this man, Mad-Eye Moody, is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
Professor Dumbledore explains that the reason no Quidditch Cup will be held is because the Triwizard Tournament will be hosted at Hogwarts this year. It’s a competition between the 3 wizarding schools of Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons. A School Champion is selected and competes in a series of tests for the honor of his or her school. Professor Dumbledore tells the students that there will be an age limit – the witch or wizard have to be of age (17) – since the tests are difficult and dangerous. Fred and George immediately start plotting on how they’re going to fool the impartial judge and get into the tournament.

“I mean, you’re not supposed to see them, are you? That’s the mark of a good house-elf, isn’t it, that you don’t know it’s there?”

“Just put them on, Archie, there’s a good chap, you can’t walk around like that, the Muggle on the gate’s already getting suspicious…”
“I brought this in a Muggle shop,” said the old wizard stubbornly. “Muggles wear them.”
“Muggle woman wear them, Archie, not the men, they wear these,” said the Ministry wizard, and he brandished the pinstriped trousers.
“I’m not putting them on,” said old Archie in indignation, “I like a healthy breeze around my privates, thanks.”

Chapter 8: The Quidditch World Cup

It is very hard for Harry and the others to ignore Draco, his father and his mother, when they also enter the Top Box. They are Cornelius Fudge’s (the Minister of Magic) guest – Lucius Malfoy has just given a large donation to St. Mungo’s hospital.
The Ireland mascots are leprechauns. They fly in the sky, scattering gold coins at the spectators. The Bulgarian mascots are veela, beautiful women who make men do anything to impress them. The Quidditch match is amazing and so are the players. Harry sees lots of new Quidditch moves. The match gets more brutal as it progresses, and finally ends in a stunning twist: Ireland win but the Bulgarian Seeker, Viktor Krum, gets the Snitch.

Begrudgingly Uncle Vernon allows him to go. Harry races upstairs to eat a decent breakfast of birthday cake, feeling enormously happy. He sends a letter to Sirius and to Ron.

He held up the envelope in which Mrs Weasley’s letter had come, and Harry had to fight down a laugh. Every bit of it was covered in stamps except for a square inch on the front, into which Mrs Weasley had squeezed the Dursleys’ address in minute writing.

In this chapter... Instead of starting the story from Harry’s perspective, we learn a little about a small village called Little Hangleton. Fifty years ago, in this village, three people were apparently murdered: Mr. and Mrs. Riddle, and their son, Tom. There was no sign how they died. The caretaker of the Riddle house is Frank Bryce. He was suspected of killing the Riddles but nothing was proven. One night, Frank sees a light in the Riddle House. Convinced that kids have broken into the mansion, Frank goes to investigate. When Frank gets inside the house, however, he he finds a very different type of burglar. Unbeknownst to old Frank, a very weak Lord Voldemort has returned to the house of his father with the assistance of his servant, Wormtail. Frank listens to their conversation, although he doesn’t understand most of it. They talk about a woman named Bertha Jorkins, who the Lord has apparently murdered, and a “faithful servant” who will soon rejoin them. They mention the Quidditch World Cup too. As Lord Voldemort discusses his future plans with Wormtail, Nagini, Voldemort’s snake, discovers Frank’s hiding spot in the hallway. Chapter 20: The Dementor’s Kiss
In this chapter... As everybody makes their way to the castle, Sirius tells Harry he is his Godfather. When Sirius’s name is cleared, Harry is more than welcome to come and live with him…unless he’d like to stay with his Aunt and Uncle. Harry is overjoyed at this thought, and can’t remember feeling happier.
Suddenly, Lupin begins transforming into a werewolf. It is a full moon and he didn’t take his potion that evening. Sirius urges them all to escape, then turns into a dog, to protect them from Lupin. Pettigrew, while all this is happening, manages to turn back into his rat form and escapes to freedom.
Harry is terrified to find that Sirius has been surrounded by dementors. Harry tries to fend them off with the Patronus Chame but it isn’t strong enough. Just as one of them is about to kiss Harry and suck out his soul for good, someone jumps out of the bushes and repels them all away with a huge Patronus Charm. Harry feebly looks at him, and then passes out.

“Are you insane?” said Harry, his voice easily as croaky as Black’s. “Of course I want to leave the Dursleys! Have you got a house? When can I move in?”

He says that the Trio attacked him. Harry tries to tell Fudge of Sirius’s innocence and Pettirgrew’s betrayal, but Fudge won’t listen. When Professor Dumbledore shows up, the Trio has a spark of hope.
Professor Dumbledore forms a plan that will free more than one innocent life that evening. Harry learns how Hermione has been getting to all her lessons – she has been using a Time-Turner. A Time-Turner makes you turn back time. Harry and Hermione go back in times to three hours ago. Ron is still injured with his leg. Harry and Hermione rescue Buckbeak from his execution. Harry also saves himself from the dementors. He performs a magnificant Patronus Charm. Then Hermione and Harry fly Buckbeak to where Sirius is locked up. Sirius thanks them with all his heart and flies away into the night on Buckbeak’s back.

“I knew I could do it this time,” said Harry, “because I’d already done it…Does that make sense?”

On what floor does Professor Dumbledore tell Harry and Hermione that Professor Flitwick's office (where Sirius Black is being held) is on? Seventh

Chapter 22: Owl Post Again

In this chapter... Harry and Hermione just make it back into the hospital wing before the three hours are up. Fudge and Professor Snape are livid when they find out that Sirius escaped, but they certainly don’t suspect Harry and Hermione. They are sure that they never left their hospital beds.
The next day, Hagrid tells Harry, Ron and Hermione that Professor Lupin has resigned. It is not worth teaching at Hogwarts now that everybody knows he is a werewolf. Harry tries to pursuade Lupin to stay on but to no avail. However, Lupin gives him back his Invisability Cloak – it was left near the Whomping Willow – and, seeming he is no longer his teacher, the Maurauders Map back.
Harry discusses what he saw, when he preformed the Patronus Charm, with Professor Dumbledore. He was sure that it was his father – his patronus seems to be a stag – and Dumbledore says that ones that we love never really leave up. The spirit of James of Potter was around last night, in James. Harry tells Dumbledore, about how Professor Trelawnley made the prediction that the Dark Lord will rise again. Dumbledore is impressed – this seems to make two predictions that Professor Trelawnley had got right. And, says Professor Dumbledore, although Peter Pettigrew has probably returned to Lord Voldemort, one day Harry will be pleased that he spared Peter’s life. For now, Peter has a life debt to Harry.
Hermione tells Harry and Ron, on their way home, that she has dropped Muggle Studies. She realises she was doing to many lessons. They are all surprised when a small owl shows up outside their carraige window. It has a letter from Sirius. Sirius says that it was him that sent Harry the Firebolt, and he also encloses a signed permission form that will allow Harry to visit Hogsmeade next year. Sirius suggests that Ron can have the owl, since Scabbers is no longer his pet rat.
Harry is sad, to return to Privet Drive. However, Ron tells Harry that the Quidditch World Cup is this summer and that Harry might be able to go with him. Harry gets a last laugh when Uncle Vernon is shocked and frightened to learn Harry has an escaped prisoner as a godfather who will be checking in on Harry’s happiness.

“Professor Dumbledore – yesterday, when I was having my Divination exam, Professor Trelawney went very – very strange.”
“Indeed?” said Dumbledore. “Er – stranger than usual, you mean?”

Professor Dumbledore, the Minister of Magic, another man and a exuctuioner is heading towards Hagrid’s hut. Hagrid send the Trio away. They sneak off back towards the castle. Scabbers is wriggling frantically in Ron’s pocket. The Trio hear the dull thud of the ax and Hagrid’s cries.

“Hermione!” said Lupin, startled. “What’s the matter?”
“P-P-Professor McGonagall!” Hermione gasped, pointing into the trunk. “Sh-she said I’d failed everything!”

What was the name of Buckbeak’s (supposed to be) executioner? Macnair

Hermione and Ron are panic stricken – they can’t figure out how to get the Whomping Willow. Crookshanks shows them the way. There is a tunnel that leads to the Shrieking Shack. They find Ron upstairs Ron tries to tell his friends that Sirius Black is the great black dog, - he is a Animagus, he can change into a animal at will. All the teachers at Hogwarts know that he is one. Lupin tells the Trio about when he was at school. He had three best friends – Sirius, James (Harry’s father) and Peter Pettigrew. His three friends became unregistered Animagi to help him during his transformations. There is a reason why Professor Snape is not fond of Lupin, and why he hated Harry’s father. Snape was at school with Lupin and the others. Snape was almost killed one night when Sirius put him in harm’s way during one of Lupin’s transformations, and it was James that pulled him back and saved his life. Just as Lupin as finishing this tale, Professor Snape appears in the dootway and disarms them all.

Hermione pleads with Snape to let Lupin finish the story, which might prove Sirius’s innocence. Snape refuses. Professor Snape is knocked out by the force of the three spells.
Lupin finishes his story, telling them that it was Pettigrew that had betrayed Harry’s parent’s, not Sirius. Sirius and Peter swapped roles – Peter was the Potter’s Secret Keeper. Sirius never told Lupin that they swapped roles, as he was afraid that Lupin betrayed the Potters. The Trio finally believe this long and complicated story. Lupin forces Scabbers reveal himself to his true form. The Trio are all amazed when the rat turns into the short, balding Peter Pettigrew. Peter finally admits to selling James and Lily Potter out to Voldemort. Peter seems terrified – especailly of Sirius. Harry believes Sirius. He begs Sirius and Lupin not to kill Pettigrew. They will take him to the castle, and let the dementors deal with them. They tie him up, and they head back up to the castle. Professor Snape is still out cold.

They give him a secret map of Hogwarts that shows all the secret passages out of school. The map also shows the location of every person, ghost, animal and more in Hogwarts castle. The map is called the Maurauders Map – it was invented by a Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prong. Fred and George “borrowed” the map from Filch’s office, in their first year,

Sirius was the one who betrayed James and Lily to Voldemort. A week after Sirius became the Secret Keeper, James and Lily were murdered. Hagrid remembers when he went to Godric’s Hollow – where the Potter’s lived – to collect Harry after Voldemort attacked Lily and James. He was to take Harry to Privet Drive – on Dumbledore’s orders. Hermione promises to help Hagrid in his defense against Buckbeak.
On Christmas morning, Harry opens his present. He is totally stunned – and so is Ron – to unwrap a brand new Firebolt. There is no name attactched to the broomstick.Hermione comes into the boys dormotory with presents, and with Crookshanks. Crookshanks attempts to attack Scabbers, again, which greatly annoys Ron. The pocket sneakascope – the present that Ron sent Harry for his birthday – falls out of Harry’s trunk and spins and whistles eeriely. Harry quickly puts it away again.
The Christmas feast is over. Professor Lupin was too ill to attend. Later on, Professor McGonagall enters the Gryffindor common room, to look at the Firebolt – Hermione told her about it. McGonagall quickly takes away the broom – it might be jinxed.Harry and Ron are exceedingly annoyed with Hermione. She explains that thinks that Sirius Black sent Harry the broom as a trap.

With a bang like a gunshot, the cracker flew apart to reveal a large, pointed witch’s hat topped with a stuffed vulture. Chapter 7: The Boggart In The Wardrobe
In this chapter...It is rumoured that Sirius Black has been sighted, Malfoy is still acting the injured hero – but the trio aren’t convinced that he is as injured as he says he is. Malfoy also drops mysterious hints to Harry about Sirius Black. It makes Harry wonder what Draco knows that he doesn’t.
The third years have their first Defense Against the Dark Arts class with Professor Lupin. Lupin takes the class to the staff-room to battle their first boggart. A boggart is a a shape-shifting creature that turns into whatever you’re most afraid of. Laughter is the best way to get rid of it – you have to make it turn into something you consider funny. Neville is nervous, when Lupin asks him to go first. His greatest fear is Professor Snape – not suprising as Snape bullies Neville about his poor Potion making, But Lupin manages to make Neville think of Professor Snape is his grandmothers clothes, complete with vulture hat and red handbag. Neville very easily gets rid of the biggart Snape with this. Everyone is successful except for Harry. When it comes to his turn Lupin steps in and gets rid of it before Harry can even test his skills against it. Lupin’s boggart, curiously enough, seems to be a cystal ball. Hermione, to her disappointment, does not get the opportunity to get rid of her boggart.
This is a absolutely fantastic chapter, full of details and we see Neville beginning to come out of himself.

“What would you say is the thing that frightens you most in the world?” Neville’s lips moved, but no noise came out. “Didn’t catch that, Neville, sorry,” said Professor Lupin cheerfully.
Neville looked around rather wildly, as though begging someone to help him, then said, in barely more that a whisper, “Professor Snape.”

What colour handbag does Neville’s grandmother usually carry? Red (Crimson)

Chapter 8: Flight Of The Fat Lady

In this chapter... Harry still wonders why Lupin did not want him to battle the boggart. Harry thinks Lupin didn’t think that Harry had the strength to face the creature he most fears. Crookshanks, Hermiones cat, keeps trying to eat Scabbers, Ron’s rat. This causes argruments between the pair, with Harry in the middle. But then again, cats always like chasing rats don’t they?…
The Quidditch season finally starts and the first visit to Hogsmead is arranged for Hallowe’en. But, seeming Harry hasn’t had his permission form signed by his guardians, he can’t go. Professor McGonagall says it is a shame, but she can’t allow Harry to go. Professor McGonagall is also concerned about Harry practising Quidditch in the evenings with Sirius Black loose. It is the first Quiddicth match of the season soon. It is usually Gryffindor against Slytherin. But Draco’s “injury” has made the Slytherin’s cancel the match. Draco is the Slytherin seeker. So it is going to be Gryffindor against Hufflepuff.
When the Hogsmead trip comes, Hogwarts is emptier than usual, seeming the pupils from third year upwards are allowed to go to Hogsmead. Harry wanders aimlessly atound the castle, and Lupin invites him to have a cup of tea with him. Harry finally voices his bewilderment about the boggart. He questions Lupin about why he didn’t allow him to fight it. Lupin admits that he was afraid the boggart would turn into Lord Voldemort and scare everyone. Harry says that he’s more afraid of the dementors than Voldemort. Professor Lupin isn’t looking very well. Professor Snape brings him a pick-me-up that he has brewwed himself – the Wolfsbane potion.
Ron and Hermione bring Harry loads of goodies from Hogsmead. At the Halloween Feast they all stuff themselves full of delicious food. After the feast, and when they return to their Common Room however, they discover the Fat Lady has disappeared and her portrait has been shredded. The Fat Lady guards Gryffindor tower. Professor Dumbledore is sent for immediately. Peeves informs the headmaster that the Fat Lady refused Sirius Black entrance when he didn’t know the password, and that he cut up her painting in his rage.

“Professor Snape has very kindly concocted a potion for me,” he said. “I have never been much of a potion-brewer and this one is particualy complex.” He picked up the goblet and sniffed it. “Pity sugar makes it useless,” he said, taking a sip and shuddering.

Chapter 9: Grim Defeat

In this chapter... The whole school sleeps in the Great Hall on Hallowe’en night, while the professors search the school for Sirius Black. There is no sign of him and the school is rife with gossip about how he got into the school. Hogwarts is well protected – and not only by Dementors.
Professor Snape takes the next Denfense Against the Dark Arts lessons, to the Gryffindors horror. Apparently, Professor Lupin is too ill to teach it. Snape snears at what Lupin has taught the class so far. He deliberately goes to the back of the textbook and questions to class on werewolves – it is obvious that they haven’t had time to learn about them yet. He takes points of Harry for being late to class, points of Hermione for knowing the answers about werewolves and puts Ron on detention for standing up for Hermione, after Snape calls her a “insufferable know-it-all”.
The day of the first Quidditch match arrives, The weather is terrible – a raging storm and torrential rain. Harry can’t see anything because of the torrential rain. Hermione puts a water repellent spell on Harry’s glasses which helps a little. Harry is horrified, while flying around, looking for the Snitch, to see a great black dog – the same he saw in Magnolia Cresent – in the stands. Harry knows it is a Grim – a omen of death. There is also about a hundred dementors on the grounds. His head is filled with screams and shouting. Harry passes out.
Harry regains conciousness in the hospital wing. He learns that Cedric Diggory got the Snitch just as Harry collapsed and that they lost the game. Diggory did want to forfeit the game, but Hufflepuff won fair and square, Harry finds out from Ron and Hermione that his broom was destroyed when he fell off. It drifted into the Whomping Willow and was beaten to splinters.

“Honestly, am I the only person who’s ever bothered to read Hogwarts, A History?” said Hermione crossly to Harry and Ron.
“Probably,” said Ron. “Why?”

When Professor Snape assigns Harry's Defence Against the Dark Arts class to begin studying werewolves, Hermione comments that they're due to start learning about what kind of creature? Hinkypunks

Harry is pulled into the diary and is taken back fifty years. He learns that Tom was a half blood – Muggle father and witch Mother – and was brought up in a orphanage. It is the day of the Hufflepuff versus Gryffindor Quidditch match. The match is cancelled by Professor McGonagall. There has been another double attack. She takes Harry and Ron to the hospital wing.. They’re shocked to find out that Hermione has been Petrified along with another Ravenclaw girl, Penelope Clearwater.
Security is tightened at Hogwarts – no students are allowed out on their own after 6 pm., Harry and Ron sneak to Hagrid’s house, under Harry’s invisability cloak, to ask him about opening the Chamber the first time. They hide quickly when someone else knocks on the door. Dumbledore and the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, come in, shortly followed by a gloating Lucius Malfoy. Hagrid is taken away to Azkaban as a “precaution”, and Dumbledore is asked to step down as Headmaster. Before he leaves, Hagrid gives the hidden Harry and Ron a mysterious hint, telling them to follow the spiders if they want more information. Ron is not pleased with this hint – he is absolutly terrified of spiders.

"However,” said Dumbledore, speaking very slowly and clearly, so that none of them could miss a word, “you will find that I will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to me. You will also find that help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.”

Suddenly they’re captured by gigantic spiders and are taken back to a nest that is filled with thousands of other spiders.
The leader of the spiders is called Aragog. He tells the boys that Hagrid raised him from a tiny egg, and Hagrid hid him in Hogwarts when he was at school. Hagrid protected Aragog when the Chamber of Secrets was opened fifty years ago. Everybody believed Aragog was the monster in the Chamber of Secrets. Aragog tells them that the beast that’s in the castle is one that spiders fear above all others, but won’t tell them what it is. Aragog also tells them, fifty years ago, a young girl was murdered in a bathroom, by the monster in the Chamber of Secrets. The spiders are about to attack Harry and Ron, but the Ford Anglia comes to their rescue, and flies them out of the Forest.
Harry wonders if the girl who was murdered is Moaning Mytle – he and Ron decide to question Mrytle.

Harry plays in the first match of the Quidditch season. During the game, Harry realizes that someone has cursed one of the Bludgers. It won’t stop from going after him. Harry decides to take care of it on his own by out-maneuvering it. Just as he is about to catch the Snitch, however, the Bludger hits his arm hard and breaks it. He manages to reach out with his other hand, grab the Snitch, and win the game for Gryffindor. When Harry comes to he finds Lockheart standing over him, attempting to cure him. Lockheart ends up removing Harry’s bone, not mending it.
Harry spends the night in the hospital wring – Madam Pomfrey regrows the bones in his arm. In the middle of the night Harry is awaken by Dobby the house-elf. Harry is extremely annoyed to learn that Dobby not only closed the barriar, at King’s Cross, to try and stop Harry returning to Hogwarts, but also cursed the Bludger.Dobby says something evil is happening at Hogwarts – Harry would be much better at Privet Drive. Dobby says that the Chamber of Secrets gas been reopened again.
Professor Dumbledore comes into the hospital wing with Professor McGonagall. They’re carrying someone who is stiff as a board. When Madam Pomfrey comes in she’s horrified to see that the first year, Colin Creevey has been Petrified just like Mrs Norris. Harry overhears Dumbledore saying the Chamber of Secrets has indeed been opened again.

“Excuse me?” said Ron sharply. “What d’you mean, a bit of whoever we’re changing into? I’m drinking nothing with Crabbe’s toenails in it – ”

They are brewing it in the girls toilets – haunted by Moaning Myrtle. The trio decide to cause a diversion in Professor Snape’s class so they can steal the ingredients they need. Hermione shocks Ron and Harry by volunteering to do the actual stealing. The plan goes perfectly, and they get what they need.
A Duelling club is going to be started, which causes a lot of interest with the Hogwarts pupils. Professor Fliwick – the Charms tutor – is rumoured to be a former duelling champion so everyone hopes it is him who will be running it. However, it is Professor Lockheart who is assisted by Professor Snape. The first meeting is a disaster when Malfoy and Harry duel and he shoots a snake out of his wand at Harry. The snake makes to attack Justin Finch-Fletchley, a Hufflepuff who is a Muggle born.. Harry tells the snake to go away, but for some reason this terrifies all the students. Ron rushes him out of the room. Harry later finds out that he is a Parselmouth, and can talk to snakes. When you talk to snakes, it is called Parseltongue. Harry mentions to Hermione and Ron that he once spoke to a boa constrictor in the zoo – before he knew he was a wizard – and even let the snake free. Ron says that Salazar Slytherin was a Parselmouth – this is why the Slytherin emblem is a snake. Everyone thinks he’s Slytherin’s Heir – especailly the Hufflepuffs – and they believe Harry is responsible for opening the Chamber of Secrets. When Justin Finch-Fletchley and Nearly Headless Nick are Petrified – and Harry found near the scene – Harry is taken to see Professor Dumbledore.

When he was Sorted last year, the Hat did say he would suit Slytherin, but Harry asked not to be put in Slytherin. Harry learns about Phoenixes after watching Dumbledore's bird, Fawkes, burn up and rise from his own ashes. Professor Dumbledore enters the study. Before Dumbledore can confront Harry Hagrid bursts through the door, with a dead rooster, saying that Harry had nothing to do with the Petrifying of Justin Finch-Fletchley and Nearly Headless Nick. Professor Dumbledore quickly assures Hagrid that he does not believe Harry was involved. He asks Harry if there’s anything he’d like to tell him. Again, Harry does not reveal he can hear a voice in the walls, and says nothing.
The trio stay at Hogwarts at Christmas, in order to finally get into Slytherin’s Common Room to question Malfoy. The Polyjuice Potion is finally ready on Christmas Day. Hermione already has a well-thought-out plan for how it’s going to work. They put Crabbe and Goyle to sleep with enchanted choclate cakes and use a piece of their hair to throw into their respective potions. Hermione uses the hair of Millicent Bulstrude, another Slytherin. Before they know it, Ron and Harry are looking just like Crabbe and Goyle. Hermione refuses to come out of toilet cubical for some reason so Harry and Ron leave without her.
They run into Malfoy and make it into the Slytherin Common Room. The Slytherin password is Pure Blood. Harry and Ron are shocked and disappointed to learn that Malfoy has no idea who the Heir of Slytherin is. Malfoy gleefully shows his friends a newspaper article from the Daily Prophet, saying how Arthur Weasley has been fined 50 galleons for the enchanted car. Malfoy also mentions that his father has some Dark Arts stuff hiden at their home. Ron and Harry barely make it out of the Common Room without detection, because they suddenly start turning back into themselves. When they make it back to the bathroom they finally persuade Hermione to come out of her toilet cubical, and they’re horrified to discover she looks exactly like a cat. Moaning Myrtle find it all very amusing.

Percy, who hadn’t noticed that Fred had bewitched his Prefect badge so that it now read “Pinhead”, kept asking them all what they were sniggering at.

Harry is caught by Filch, the caretaker, and dragged into his office. A commotion from the floor above – Filch guesses the culprit is Peeves the poltergeist - takes Filch from the office. Harry reads a pamphlet on Filch’s desk for Kwikspell. It would seem that Filch is looking into learning magic through a correspondence course - but of course, it's probably "for a friend". Filch returns, planning his punishment for Peeves – apparently Peeves has damaged a valuable vanishing cabinet – when he notices that Harry has been reading his mail. Embarrassed, he chases Harry from his office. When Nearly Headless Nick, gets Harry out of trouble with Filch – he persuaded Peeves to cause a diversion – Harry agrees to come to Nick’s deathday party on Halloween night, with Ron and Hermione. When he, Ron, and Hermione show up, it’s creepy and uncomfortable and full of other ghosts. We meat Moaning Myrtle, who haunts the girl’s bathroom. When the trio manage to escape the party, Harry again hears the scary voice in the walls. Even though Ron and Hermione are right next to him, they don’t hear the voice. The voice whispers about killing someone. They enter a hallway where they’re shocked to find a message written in red, proclaiming the Chamber of Secrets to be opened again, and Filch’s cat, Mrs. Norris, frozen and dead looking. Before the three of them can decide what to do, other people begin to arrive, and the scene couldn't look any worse for our heroes. The stunned silence is broken by an emphatic cry from Draco Malfoy, "Enemies of the Heir, Beware! You'll be next, Mudbloods!"

Wooden filing cabinets stood around the walls; from their labels, Harry could see that they contained details of every pupil Filch had ever punished. Fred and George Weasley had an entire drawer to themselves.

The four founders of Hogwarts were Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, Godic Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin. Apparently Slytherin built a secret chamber within the school and sealed a monster inside it magically. No one but Slytherin’s true heir would be able to open the chamber, but once they did the monster would purge the school of all half-bloods. Harry begins to think that Malfoy might be the Heir of Slytherin, and they quickly come up with a plan to find out. They’re going to try to make Polyjuice Potion, which will make them look like someone else, and sneak into the Slytherin Common Room to listen in on Malfoy.

Ginny Weasley seemed very disturbed by Mrs. Norris’s fate. According to Ron, she was a great cat lover.

Everybody manages to get through the barriar at Kings Cross except Harry and Ron – it won’t let them through.
Ron gets the brilliant idea to use the flying Ford Anglia to get to Hogwarts. They follow the train through the air. Just as they reach Hogwarts, however, the car dies and they crash into a gigantic tree on the grounds. Ron’s wand is smashed to bits, and they quickly figure out that the tree they’ve landed in is intent on killing them.
Professor Snape meets them in the grounds of the schopol. He says that Muggles saw them in the flying car – this means expulsion. . When Professor’s Dumbledore and McGonagall show up, however, Harry and Ron are relieved to discover they only get a detention and not expulsion. Professor Dumbledore warns them that he will be writing to Ron’s parents, and Harry’s Aunt and Uncle however.Professor Snape ia very disappoint that they aren’t expelled! Ginny has been sorted into Gryffindor, like all her brothers.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This was published on 2 July 1998. In November 2002, a film was also made of the book.

Chapter One: The Worst Birthday

In this chapter... We meet Harry Potter again at Number 4 Privet Drive, being bullied by his Uncle, his Aunt and his cousin Dudley. However, Harry’s relations are more scared of him now – they know he is a wizard. It is Harry’s twelfth birthday – his relations have not remembered it or even mentioned of it of course – but he had hoped to hear from his best friends, Ron and Hermione. Uncle Vernon is having his boss over for dinner in order to complete a very important sales deal. Harry has to spend the evening in his room, making no noise and pretending he doesn’t exist. Harry is sure he saw something staring at him, through the hedge in the Dursley’s garden. Harry goes to his bedroom, when the guests arrive, to find a strange creature, sitting on his bed.

“I’ll be in my room, making no noise and pretending I’m not there” said Harry tonelessly.

When the Dursleys are going over their positions for when the dinner guests arrive, where is Aunt Petunia supposed to be? In the lounge

Chapter Two: Dobby's Warning

In this chapter... we discover that the creature is a house elf, named Dobby. Dobby turns out to be a highly emotional elf, which keeps hitting himself around the head. Dobby has come to tell Harry that he must not return to Hogwarts. Dobby has been intercepting Harry’s letters – no, Hermione and Ron haven’t forgotten him, even Hagrid the gamekeeper of Hogwarts has written to him – and Harry can have the letters back if he promises not to return to Hogwarts. Dobby goes downstairs. Harry runs downstairs to find him, and his heart stops when he sees Dobby in the kitchen, floating a gigantic pudding in midair. When Harry again refuses to stay home from Hogwarts, Dobby drops the gigantic pudding on the floor, sending it flying all over the kitchen.
Uncle Vernon manages to gloss the whole thing over. It ends badly when an owl sent by the Ministry of Magic arrives and terrifies the guests. Harry is told he is not allowed to do magic outside school, especailly in front of Muggles from the Ministry. When Uncle Vernon finds that Harry is not allowed to use spells during holidays he locks Harry up in his room and puts bars on his windows. Three days later, Harry wakes up to find Ron Weasley floating outside his window.
Three days after his imprisonment, Harry wakes up to find Ron Weasley floating outside his window.

“You didn’t tell us you weren’t allowed to use magic outside school” said Uncle Vernon, a mad gleam dancing in his eyes. “Forgot to mention it…slipped your mind, I dare say…”

What type of owl delivers the letter from the Ministry of Magic to the Dursleys? Barn owl

Chapter Three: The Burrow

In this chapter... Harry is delighted to find that Ron, Fred, and George have come to take him home in a flying car that their father owns. Using the car they pull the bars off the windows and load Harry’s stuff in. Harry barely makes it away from the grasp of Uncle Vernon, but finally pulls free and they gleefully set off into the night towards Ron’s home. Harry tells the boys about Dobby – none of them seem to take the threat of something dangerous being at Hogarts seriously. Harry does wonder however who Dobby belongs too. House Elves usually belong to rich and powerful wizards – like the Malfoy family. Mr Malfoy – father of Draco Malfoy, Harry’s biggest enemy at Hogwarts – was, according to Fred, a big supporter of Voldemort and then returned to the “good side” when Voldemort disappeared.
Harry is delighted with the Weasley’s home – the Burrow. However, Mrs Weasley – Molly – is not at all happy to learn that her sons flew a enchanted car to Harry’s relations and back. She is pleased to see Harry however. The youngest of the Weasley’s – Ginny – is very shy around Harry.
Harry learns that Mr Weasley – Arthur – is fasinated by Muggle things – he enchanted the flying car. Harry and Ron go to Ron’s room. Ron’s room is mostly orange, as he supports the Quidditch team, The Chudley Cannons

“Your sons flew that car to Harry’s house and back last night” shouted Mrs Weasley. “What have you got to say about that, eh?”
“Did you really?” said Mr Weasley eagerly. “Did it go all right? I – I mean,” he faltered, as sparks flew from Mrs Weasley’s eyes, “that-that was very wrong boys – very wrong indeed….”

Which Quidditch team does Ron support? Chudley Cannons

Chapter 16, The Trap Door
It is exam time – Harry tries hard to get through his exams with a shooting pain searing through his scar and the thought of Voldemort bursting through the door at any minute! But somehow he manages. The trio ask Hagrid how to get past Fluffy. Apparently, if you play Fluffy music, it will send it to sleep. The trio decide to see Professor Dumbledore, and tell them that they know about the Philosopher’s Stone and that Professor Snape wants it. Professor McGonagall tells them that Professor Dumbledore is not at Hogwarts but on his way to London. Knowing they need to do something to protect the Philosopher’s Stone from Snape (cough), they all decide to take an adventure to the Third Floor corridor and go through a series of enchantments left by each Hogwarts Professor. Neville tries to stop the trio going – he doesn’t want Gryffindor to lose even more points. But Hermione does the Petificus Totalus spell on him, the full Body-Bind. They go through the trap door. The Philosopher’s Stone is protected by various charms, put on by various teachers Professor Sprout provided Devil’s Snare, a plant that dislikes the sun. Professor Flitwick put a flying charm on keys – to Harry it was just like Quidditch to capture the right key. Professor McGonagall transfigured some chessmen, and the Trio play a real game of chess – Ron sacrifices himself in the chess game so Hermione and Ron can go on. Next is a logic puzzle, set by Snape, involving seven potions. One potion will take them forward to the final chamber while the other takes them back to safety. Harry tells Hermione to go and get Ron, and go to the Owlery, and send an Owl to Professor Dumbledore. Harry must go it alone. Harry walks through a black flame into the last chamber to discover...

“So light a fire!” Harry choked.
“Yes – of course – but there’s no wood!” Hermione cried, wringing her hands.
“HAVE YOU GONE MAD?” Ron bellowed, “ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT?”

What plant do Harry, Hermione and Ron land on after jumping through the trapdoor? Devil’s Snare

Chapter 17, The Man with Two Faces
But Snape is not in the final chamber - it's Quirrell! And in full blown evilness, not a stutter or twitch in sight. It was Quirrell who jinxed Harry’s broom at the Quidditch match – not Professor Snape. Professor Snape, in fact, was counter-jinxing the broom, to keep Harry safe. Snape has been suspecting Quirrell all year. Snape hates Harry because he was at school with Harry’s father, James. And James once saved Snape’s life. This life debt has hung over Snape ever since. Quirrell and sets all of his attention on retrieving the stone from the Mirror of Erised. Harry does his best to try and distract Quirrell from the mirror but to no avail. Harry is able to retrieve the stone from the mirror himself (but only because he would not use it). Quirrell in his frustration of not being able to discover the stone's whereabouts is in need of assistance from the tower of terror himself. He begins to unwrap his smelly turban to unveil the bodiless face of Lord Voldemort. Voldemort knows Harry is lying about the location of the stone and a battle ensues. Fortunately for Harry, every time he touches Quirrell, he causes Quirrell's exposed skin to turn red, raw and blistered. Harry realizes that this is the way to save the stone, if only he doesn't die in the process.

Harry awakes in the hospital wing with Professor Dumbledore by his side. Professor Dumbledore explains that he got there just in time to save Harry's life. But Harry is more concerned by the inevitable return of Voldemort and the safety of the stone. Harry and Dumbledore have a wonderful heart to heart with most of Harry's questions going unanswered. We learn the reason why Voldemort is not able to harm Harry. It was all down to Lily, a mother's protection.

Hagrid brings a special present of photographs of Harry's parents. Slytherin are announced the winners of the House Cup – they have earned the most House Points over the year – during the End of Term feast. Slytherin have 472 while Gryffindor, unfortunately, have the least points with 312. However… Professor Dumbledore has a few last minute points to award. He awards Ron fifty points for the best-played chess Hogwarts have ever seen. Then fifty points to Hermione for the use of cool logic in the face of fire. Harry is awarded 60 points for pure nerve and outstanding courage. This brings Gryffindor level with Slytherin in House Points. And finally, Neville is awarded ten points for standing up to his friends. Gryffindor have won the House Cup!! Harry leaves Hogwarts for the summer holidays at the Dursleys. But he knows he will soon be returning to Hogwarts in September. This is the end of Harry’s first year at Hogwarts.

“After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure”

At the end of term feast, Professor Dumbledore gave out extra points helping Gryffindor win the house cup. How many points did they finish on? 482
